Lib Dem Councillor for Pennington Ward on Lymington and Pennington Town Council, Jack Davies, has called on the Conservative Mayor, Cllr Barry Dunning, to resign after exposing his misuse of public money to attend a Tory Party fundraising dinner.
The dinner, held at South Lawn Hotel in Milford-on-Sea on the 12th November 2016, cost £25 per ticket. The Record of Payments by the Town Council for September 2016 shows £50 had been paid by the Town Council to New Forest West Conservative Party.
Cllr Jack Davies said:
“I was elected onto Lymington and Pennington Town Council to hold local representatives to account.
“Councillor Dunning has been either very naïve or very ignorant of the laws governing local Councillors by assuming that the people of Lymington and Pennington would have to pay for him to attend a Conservative Party dinner. In effect, Councillor Dunning has taken public money and given it to the Conservative Party.
“As one of Lymington and Pennington’s Councillors, I call on the Mayor to do the decent thing and resign from his position to allow somebody else to take the reins. I also call on the Mayor to apologise to the residents of Lymington and Pennington for using their money to pay for something that really should have come out of his own personal finances.
“We cannot have Conservative Councillors abusing the Council to help fund Conservative Party operations in the New Forest. I will continue to stand up and speak out against this abuse of public money.
“I will be passing the details of this case on to the Monitoring Officer at New Forest District Council as well as Lymington and Pennington Town Council’s external auditors.”
