Lyndhurst Liberal Democrats welcome the decision by New Forest National Park Planners to refuse planning consent to Pegasus Life who had applied to knock down the Lyndhurst Park Hotel and develop it into a luxury retirement home consisting of 74 new units for wealthy pensioners and 12 holiday lets.
Lyndhurst Liberal Democrats were early campaigners against this scheme, attending several public meetings and Alexi Sugden, Prospective County Council Candidate for Lyndhurst and Fordingbridge, spoke out against the proposals.
Speaking of the decision to reject the Pegasus Life proposal, Alexi said:
“I opposed this scheme for many reasons.
“Firstly, there was no obligation on the developer to provide any affordable housing under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act.
“Secondly, there are already many retirement homes in Lyndhurst and some of these remain unsold.
“Most importantly, however, we need affordable homes to attract young families to the area. This proposal would not have provided the affordable housing we need.
“We must also take into account the effect that 74 additional units for wealthy pensioners would have had on our local Health Services who are already struggling to cope.
“We shall now take part in the future of the old Lyndhurst Park Hotel.”
